Not Feeling Motivated…

11 02 2010

What is one to do? Even when the gym is calling from downstairs I seem to be finding every excuse not to go! Needing a nap, having a snack, writing this blog post…

I’m sure we would all agree that motivation is key to attaining our fitness goals, but what contributes to this general lack of motivation? Is it Winter blues (Seasonal Affective Disorder) or is it just simple laziness?!?!Not sure about you, but I can speak for myself and say that, in general, I’m merely answering the call of the couch and for the past few days that call is getting louder.

What should we do to stay motivated? Everywhere I look I keep seeing things like:

  • set goals – this is key to the success of any training routine, but a suggestion would be to break your goal down into smaller ones so you have successes along the way to your overall.
  • keep a training diary - these are great ways to track both your progress and your routine so that you can change up your workout every now and again, 3 months is the general consensus.
  • get a workout partner – This one I would say is more of a personal preference, but my advice is to choose wisely as this could also have the opposite effect.
  • reward yourself – Just because you are trying to get in shape doesn’t mean you need to punish yourself, just don’t over do it!

What’s keeping you motivated to keep your fitness goals or helping you stay on track?

Tonight, for me, it will just have to be a healthy dose of mind over matter! Until tomorrow…

Progress… Even with a vacation!

2 02 2010

12 days of fun and sun and still something to show for it! I stuck to my guns and managed to maintain my weight and body fat %, even while spending the majority of my days lounging on the beach.

A big help was taking some time each morning to complete a few simple exercises, some of which are mentioned in my previous post, and walking at a very brisk pace throughout the vacation. I’m sure that the very steep hills and stairs also had a big role to play. Trust me taking the stairs was not the easiest or most popular method of travel, but it was by far the healthier way!

Making a few smart choices by monitoring portions was also key. Just because food is there doesn’t mean you should or have to finish eating it!
